Creating keepsakes with flowers

I long for the day we can grow flowers in the garden, and enjoy them. Rather than the children beheading them and presenting them to me as a gift, our norm.

Meeting half way means making the most of the opportunity, and I have fond memories of creating gifts from pressed flowers as a child. Within books, or within a wooden press with intriguing papers, card, screws and bolts.

Interplay UK have created an instant response to drying and pressing flowers, and we decided to put it to the test after a recent after-school walk had seen some flowers return home.

The flowers are laid between cotton sheets and embedded in felt pads, before being held securely in the hinged press. Simple and straightforward, CM took great care in positioning the flowers. The size of our flowers meant we used the two felt pads, larger flowers may not need both pads but they will probably need a little rest between picking and pressing at this time of year.

With the press prepared all you have to do is place it in a microwave with 1/2 a cup of cold water for 20 seconds. When cool, you can check the progress of the flowers and if they are still damp simply assemble the press and add another 1/2 cup of cold water until the flowers to appear dry.

With our flowers dried and pressed we had to decide how we would use them in a craft activity. As CM has started reading in earnest, and books which require more than one sitting, I thought a book mark would make a simple keepsake which would allow her to treasure her finds.

With our treasures, card, acetate, ribbon and tape our task was straightforward.

And CM has a keepsake of her treasures, and lots of ideas for gifts for those she loves using her flower press.

The Instant Flower Press is part of the ‘My Living World’ range by Interplay UK with an RRP of £9.99. Recommended for children aged 8+, with an adult operating the microwave oven the craft can be enjoyed by younger children.
